Maharashtra to require domicile certificate for driving licence from Aug 1: Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik

The Maharashtra government will make domicile certificate mandatory for obtaining driving license from August 1, 2026, as part of a new policy to streamline the licensing process, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik told the legislature on Tuesday.

He said the proposal outlining the new driving license rules has been sent to the Department of Law and Judiciary for approval and will be implemented after the necessary permits are obtained.

Replying to a question posed by MLA Dilip Lande during Question Hour, Sarnaik said the government has taken action against unauthorized bike taxi services and is also working on a regulatory framework to legalize and regulate the industry, generate revenue for the state and create employment opportunities for youth.
