Liberal comedian Bill Maher suggested Monday that President Donald Trump’s appeal to young white men is to be one of the few voices that doesn’t condemn them for who they are.

Maher sat down with actor Joel Edgerton on the “Club Random” podcast. While they lamented the role of guilt in religion, they both agreed about how modern society preaches new kinds of guilt, from not spending enough time with one’s children to shaming young white men.

“There’s a lot of guilt. There’s no reason to feel guilty,” Maher said. “I’m sure you’re a better parent to your kids than anyone in my era in terms of how much time you spend with them. So my parents of that generation felt no obligation. ‘We brought you into this world, you have a roof, you have clothes, you have food, and you have your own life.’ like.”

“And we were better. I had a free childhood where I could do whatever I wanted. ‘Be home at six, dinner is then,'” he added.

Maher criticized the idea of shaming working parents, including movie stars, for not spending enough time at home with their children. “Get over yourself. Your father is a movie star and you know that, okay. So that’s what he is. We can’t change who we are.”

“You know, there’s so much shaming going on,” she continued. “You know, people wonder why so many young people are voting for Trump. Maybe because, you know, he’s just a guy who doesn’t make you feel guilty for being born with a zk. You know? It’s true! He’s got a lot of charm. They make you, you know, feel a lot of things – not me, I’m old enough to remember the opposite, so I get a reaction.”

“If you’re 22, you don’t remember a time when it was the other way around. So you just saw the reaction. You just saw, ‘White men are bad!'” Maher said. “You saw it,” he added.

“I remember when he was first voted out and he realized there was kind of a lack of awareness of how men felt in the world,” Edgerton said.

He pointed out the importance of merit and how far the effort for inclusivity has gone beyond merit and common sense.

“’I’m all for inclusivity,’ and then it’s like a few months later you’re talking to the same person and it’s like I’m horrified,’” Edgerton said. “And it’s like, why can’t you be good at what you do?”

Maher acknowledged that there were indeed dark parts of America’s past, but suggested that people needed to acknowledge how much better things had gotten and that society as a whole needed to reinvigorate the idea of meritocracy.

“The pendulum shifts and changes, but in terms of merit, it’s just one thing, like merit,” Edgerton said. “And it’s like, I mean, I don’t know how you’re going to solve this problem, especially with two White men sitting in the seats talking about it.”

“Okay, but it’s still a question of guilt, which I won’t accept,” Maher said. “Just because we’re white men doesn’t mean we can’t have an opinion or have that discussion.”
