Maine Senate candidate Platner says politicians aren’t ‘trying’ to tax the rich

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner suggested in a new interview that actual plans to tax the wealthy have not been properly tested.
while appearing inMore Perfect UnionIn the podcast released Thursday, Platner discussed his goal of reining in billionaires, believing that billionaires have “too much power” and are “running the country right now” instead of President Donald Trump.
Platner was then asked how he could implement policies that would go after billionaires, such as higher taxes that would not impact small businesses as they have in the past.

“I think, to be frank, the reason the middle class is exposed to this every time they try is because they don’t try,” Platner said. “Because if they did, it would offend the people who donate the most money to them. And in this political system, that’s all these people care about.”
Platner credited his former college roommate, an IRS agent, with giving him insight into how government agencies are encouraged to target small businesses rather than billionaires.

“For years he’d always tell me, ‘You know, it’s funny. When our budget gets cut, our bosses come in and say it’s time to go after small and medium-sized businesses because we don’t have the manpower or resources to get involved with a billionaire’s legal team.’ It is much easier to go down and follow a small distance [business]” said Platner.

He continued: “The amazing thing to me is that we’re doing this, while the total amount of uncollected taxes from corporations in this country is hundreds of billions of dollars.”

Platner’s hope of targeting billionaires comes as progressive and current New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduces his latest “tax the rich” policy on luxury homes.
