Major incident declared and patients evacuated after fire at University Hospital Southampton

Following a fire at Southampton University Hospital, it was declared a major incident and patients were evacuated.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Southampton General Hospital at 5.30am.

More than 110 firefighters rushed to the scene, where they used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and an Aerial Ladder Platform to combat the flames.

Patients and staff in the affected areas were evacuated to safety and roads around the hospital were closed.

In a statement published on its website, University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the fire was now under control. No one was injured.

The following statements were made in the statement: “Our Emergency Department is currently removing patients unless your condition is life- or limb-threatening.

“We would ask anyone needing medical attention to use RSH or other services in the community, including the Urgent Treatment Center in Lymington.”

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service added: “Crews from across Hampshire were called to reports of a fire at University Hospital Southampton at 5.30am this morning (February 1).

“At its peak, more than 110 firefighters were mobilized to the incident. Breathing equipment, hose reel jets and the Aerial Ladder Platform are being used.

“The fire is currently under control; crews are on scene to extinguish the fire. No one was injured as a result of the fire and patients in all affected areas were evacuated to safe areas of the hospital.”
