Major police operation launched after Melbourne rocked by string of arson attacks

A major police operation has been launched following a series of allegations of arson, attempted arson, kidnappings and drive-by shootings at popular venues in Melbourne.

Operation Eclipse will focus on the people “pulling the strings” on 15 “extremely concerning” incidents that have occurred in Melbourne’s CBD and entertainment precinct since April 14.

The Albion Hotel in South Melbourne, the Emerson Hotel in South Yarra and the Soho Restaurant and Bar in Southbank are among the venues targeted.

Detective Inspector Jason Kelly, of the state’s Anti-Gangs Unit, Crime and Counter-Terrorism, said the operation would target people alleged to be “directing these crimes and recruiting predominantly young offenders to commit them”.

Inspector Kelly said: “Operation Eclipse was established to look at a series of incidents and understand who was involved and why; local detectives and other specialist units continue to investigate individual incidents.” he said.

“The danger these crimes pose to society is both significant and unacceptable.

“We have said many times over the past few years that fire is unpredictable and dangerous, and we have seen it result in people being killed and people losing their livelihoods.”

Twelve people have been arrested so far in connection with the incidents and Inspector Kelly said most of the young people arrested were members of street gangs.

Police are also working with local councils, Fire Rescue Victoria and liquor industry stakeholders.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
