Major update after pensioner, 86, mowed down and killed in Iceland car park horror | UK | News

A pensioner in Nottingham was mowed down to death by a mother who ran over the victim as she drove down a busy city road. Maureen Sanderson, 86, was wearing her “favourite pink coat”, her family said, and waving to Tracie Spowage to thank her for letting her walk in front of her white Nissan Juke, the video showed, which was played at Nottingham Crown Court.
But seconds later the driver, 58, of Basford, came forward, knocking Ms Sanderson to the ground and then running her over. Prosecutor Phil Cowburn said the incident took place outside the car park of the Iceland store on Nuthall Road, Cinderhill, at 2.06pm on Monday, October 13 last year. reports Nottingham Post.
The defendant driver was given a 10-month prison sentence suspended for one year. Judge Steven Coupland said: “Maureen Sanderson was described as a woman with a zest for life and a lot of life to live.
“It was in front of you for a long time and was there to be seen before you went out. You’re here because you didn’t see it.”
“You said you were driving carefully and described it as an accident. In your interview you said you felt very bad for his family.
“You didn’t set out to harm or hurt anyone that day, you were sober, you weren’t distracted by your mobile phone for example, but you’re here because you didn’t look properly.”
Prosecutor Mr Cowburn told the court Maureen suffered a deep fracture to her skull and died two days after being taken to hospital.
Mr Cowburn said: “Maureen was transported to QMC (Queen’s Medical Centre) where she was pronounced dead two days later. “The post-mortem report revealed the injuries were predominantly to the right side of the body and she had suffered a deep skull fracture.
“This defendant was interviewed and said he was driving very carefully, but accepted that he would not have looked at pedestrians as he was looking at the road to get into the road. He said he did not notice Ms Sanderson’s car passing in front of him.”
Her family described the mother and grandmother as a “strong woman with a zest for life” who will be greatly missed.
