Mamata’s carnival push as north Bengal reels under floods gives Opposition a handle

The decision of the Mamata Bannerjee government to continue with Durga Puja Carnival on Sunday, October 5, 2025, gathered under the floods of North Bengal, and at least 23 deaths were reported in Darjeeling, and the opposition parties gave a handle to the Western Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerler.
While the Prime Minister announced that he would visit North Bengal on Monday, October 6, 2025, together with the state -secretary of the state, he aroused a sharp criticism of his presence in the red road of Calcutta.
Approximately 116 big tickets joined Durga Pujas Durga Puja Carnival from Kalcutta and thousands of people met to watch Mega Cultural Activity. Each Durga Puja Pandal was given three minutes to exhibit his idols, themes and a short cultural program.
Prime Minister Mamata Bannerjee, accompanied by senior ministry colleagues, attended the carnival for several hours. While Durga Puja committees took the stage on the Red Road, a few film personalities joined the prime minister.
Ms. BANERJEE started the practice of organizing the Durga Puja Carnival in 2017 and started to give honorary to Durga Puja committees in 2018. In 2021, Durga Puja in Kalcutta was included in UNESCO’s non -concrete heritage list. Durga Puja Committees increased from 10,000 to 10,000 times in 2018 and rose to 1.10 lakh in 2025.
Commenting on the developments, the opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari asked why the Prime Minister did not go to Northern Bengal immediately. “Why isn’t the Prime Minister’s willing to go to North Bengal quickly? Because he didn’t have a sacrifice goat called DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation)?” Mr. Adhikari asked.
BJP leader claimed that the Prime Minister did not understand which issues should be given priority. “Even after the removal of the rest and some innocent people died of electric shock, Puja was busy with openings, and now he’s busy with carnival,” he said.
Mr. Adhikari also claimed that the government had a stepmother treatment against the Northern Bengal people. He claimed that at least 50,000 people were homeless from Cooch Behar to Kalimpong and that 21 people were killed.
State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, today is not a festival day and the Prime Minister Durga Puja Carnival cancel the carnival and the floods to stand up to stand up to Northern Bengal, he said.
Indian Communist Party (Marxist) State Secretary Md. Salim, the state witnessed such a natural disaster, while Durga Puja Carnival was questioned.
Salim said, “When the flood and destruction in North Bengal causes a regiment of death, the city of Calcutta organizes a festive carnival.”
