Mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani is under fire from an Italian American heritage group after Little Italy was left off an urban immigrant-neighborhood map tied to a World Cup tourism campaign. The omission of this map was described as an insult to one of the communities that helped build New York.
The Italian American Civil Liberties Union (IACRL) wrote in a press release about
“ITALIAN Americans BUILT THE CITY OF NEW YORK. WE ARE AGAINST THE COMMUNISTS, not the third world Ugandans,” the group added.

The map, titled “New York City Immigrant Settlements,” was created by New York City Tourism + Conventions as part of the NYC Neighborhood Passport campaign tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs unveiled the neighborhood map at stands throughout the city.
It encourages visitors to explore “diverse” communities, including 30 neighborhoods, from popular Chinatown to lesser-known Little Palestine and Little Haiti. There was no mention of any Jewish or Irish neighborhoods on the map.

“Mamdani City Hall can find room for every trendy progressive voter, but somehow it can’t find Little Italy,” IACRL president Mike Crispi said in the press release.
“Our culture is good enough for their photo ops, our food is good enough for their fundraisers, and our neighborhoods are good enough for their tourism revenue, but when it comes time to get to know Italian Americans, they write us off,” he added.
