Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after ‘car drives into pedestrians’ in London

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder after five pedestrians were injured when a car crashed into them in west London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers responded to reports of a car hitting multiple pedestrians in Ealing Broadway, Ealing, at 2.29pm on Saturday afternoon.

They added that the car involved did not stop at the scene in Ealing but was stopped “a short time later” near Grange Park and the 34-year-old Somali-born British driver was arrested.

Counter Terrorism Police (CTP) London carried out initial investigations but it is not being treated as terrorism.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Due to the nature of the incident, local police officers were in contact with officers from London Counter Terrorism Police as they carried out their initial investigations.

“While investigators remain open-minded about any possible motive, the incident is not being treated as terrorism.

“Roads have been closed in the area and may remain closed for some time while police investigations continue.”

Following the incident, two of the pedestrians on Ealing Broadway were treated at the scene, while three were taken to hospital. None suffered life-threatening or life-altering injuries.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said it was called to reports of a road traffic accident at 2.29pm.

They said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, paramedics in rapid response cars, a volunteer emergency response team and an incident response officer. We also sent the London Air Ambulance.

“We treated three patients at the scene and took one of them primarily by road to a major trauma center. We took the other two patients to a local hospital.”

The Metropolitan Police has asked anyone with information or relevant images to contact police on 101 quoting reference 4607/27JUN.
