Man bailed after fight at station
Police arrested six people, including four armed with machetes, at Flinders Street Station on Saturday night following a fight at the police station that sent a child to hospital.
In a video circulating online, two young men can be seen on the platform next to the train, surrounded by officers.
The area under the clocks on the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets was taped off at around 10.30pm. The area was busy with people visiting the upstairs ballroom for the exhibition, which is part of the ongoing Rising festival.
Victoria Police later confirmed officers attacked the 22-year-old and a group of five other teenagers following a brawl at the police station.
Police said in a statement: “Four people who boarded the train were arrested on a platform, where they were found armed with machetes by Protective Service Officers. The weapons were confiscated. The other two people were also arrested at the police station.”
“It was later revealed that a 17-year-old young man was injured during the brawl. He was taken to hospital with a laceration on his arm.”
“Among the six arrested, a 22-year-old person is charged with fighting, negligent injury, assault with a weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon.”
“He was released on bail to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 27 November.”
“The remaining five, aged 13, 14, 15 and two 16, were released pending further investigation.”
Under the laws, which came into force last September, people can be fined up to $48,000 or imprisoned for two years for possessing a machete.
There is also a permanent ban on the sale of machetes in Victoria following a series of high-profile crimes in Melbourne in 2025.
