An immigrant man was arrested in New York’s Nassau County and charged with stabbing two women to death within hours of each other. Local officials in this case underscore broader concerns about federal immigration policy.
The suspect, identified as Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, 22, faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, authorities said. Police said he was taken into custody after he approached officers and stated that he had killed someone earlier that night.
Violence unfolded within hours at two locations in Nassau County.
The first victim, a 42-year-old woman, was found outside the Wendy’s restaurant on Austin Boulevard in North Long Beach around 12:30 a.m. Friday, police said. Officers responding to a call for a person with a knife found the woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman stated that the suspect entered the United States as an unaccompanied minor and was later allowed to stay, arguing that the murders showed failures in federal immigration policy and so-called “open borders” approaches. Police have not publicly confirmed the suspect’s immigration status.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
