Man charged with murder of ‘talented’ university student | UK | News

A 22-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stabbing a “talented” student to death following a night out with the football team.

Henry Nowak, 18, of Chafford Hundred, Essex, was injured in two places, to the chest and the back of his leg, during the incident in the university town of Southampton on Wednesday, December 3. Henry died at the scene of the fight in Belmont Road, Portswood.

Vickrum Digwa, of St Denys Road, Southampton, was charged with murder and possession of a sharp instrument in a public place. The suspect, who is of British and Asian ethnicity, will appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 8, along with Kiran Kaur, 52, of St Denys Road, Southampton, who is accused of assisting an offender.

Henry’s parents paid tribute to their “wonderful” son in a statement issued through police. They said: “Our kind, bright and talented son was studying accounting and finance in his first year at the University of Southampton. He smashed his A-levels and fully embraced university life, joining not one but two football teams, making new friends and working part-time in his local Morrisons.

“Henry was loved by everyone who knew him. He was an incredible son, brother, cousin, grandson, nephew, friend and teammate. He was an all-around top kid, and everyone lucky enough to share his company thought the same.

“He went out for a night with his new football teammates to celebrate the end of their first semester at university. Unfortunately, he never made it home.”

“Our hearts ache when we think of the bright future he has ahead of him, full of opportunities and adventures. There are no words to express how heartbroken we are that we will never get to see him grow and fulfill his amazing potential.”

“We are so proud of him and what he has accomplished. Our world will never be the same without our wonderful Henry.”

The 51-year-old man, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder, was released on police bail pending further investigation. While the 26-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder, was released without any further action regarding this crime, he was also arrested on suspicion of aiding the perpetrator and public order crime.

He was released on police bail pending further investigation.

The University of Southampton also paid tribute to the student. Professor Mark E. Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, said: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the death of our student Henry Nowak.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who knew and loved him at this incredibly difficult time. “Henry was in his first year here at Southampton and his family spoke fondly of how he had embraced university life.

“We are focused on supporting our student and staff community and want them to know that they can reach us if they are experiencing difficulties or concerns. Our student center is available 24/7 by calling 02380 599 599.

“We will of course support the police in their ongoing investigation in any way we can.”
