A man was seriously injured when he was attacked by a wild elephant in the forest area in Tripura’s Khowai district on Sunday, February 8, 2026. His family said he had gone to Chakmaghat forests to graze cows.

The injured Dhananjay Biswas was admitted to a government hospital at Teliamura in Khowai. Doctors said that the 60-year-old man was injured in his legs and body.

Dhananjoy’s son quoted witnesses who reported that a wild elephant grabbed the victim with its trunk and slammed him to the ground. However, the villagers who shouted to drive the elephant away saved him.

Teliamura and adjoining areas in Khowai were under the influence of rampaging wild elephants, who frequently raided villages, destroying crops and property. There have been many deaths in Khowai in the last few years.

The migration of elephant herds through dense forests in the Hathai Kotor (formerly Boromura) Hills and Longtarai Hills occurs mostly in search of food during the dry season. A forest department official said that the implementation of a project to create a safe elephant corridor that will reduce the entry of elephants into villages is ongoing.
