Man dies after dog attack at Coonabarabran property in northwest NSW
A man died after being attacked by a dog on a rural property near Coonabarabran, about 350 kilometers north-west of Newcastle, with police later euthanising the animal at the scene.
Emergency crews were sent to Timor Road at around 10am on Sunday following reports of a dog attack.
When officers from Orana Mid Western Police District arrived, they found the 55-year-old property owner seriously injured.
Medical teams treated the man at the scene, but he died a short time later.
Police said the dog was disposed of by officers on the property and was described as medium to large size, although its breed was unknown.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
The death follows Warrumbungle Shire Council’s earlier warnings about the dangers of poorly controlled dogs, with residents urged to report aggressive behavior even where no one is injured.
In March, the council reminded dog owners that they should “take responsibility for their dogs and help protect the community”.
“There have been several recent incidents where dogs have been allowed to run loose or have escaped from their owners’ property,” the council said.
“Although you may think your dog will not attack, situations can change quickly, especially when the dog is unsupervised or under stress.”
