Man dies in police custody after alleged retirement village assault

A man has died in police custody following an alleged attack on a retirement village in the Northern Territory.
Emergency services were called to Tiwi Gardens Retirement Village in Casuarina, north of Darwin, after a man damaged window blinds and attacked a woman about 8.40pm on Monday.
A police spokesman said officers found a man near the seniors’ home and arrested him without incident.
He was placed in the back cage of a police vehicle but soon began having difficulty breathing.
“St John Ambulance was contacted while police began CPR,” a spokesman said.
The man was rushed to the Royal Darwin Hospital but later died at around 10.10pm.
“The official cause of death has not yet been determined and the deceased has not yet been officially identified,” a spokesman said.
