He was shot dead outside a Sydney home in what police said was a targeted attack, as detectives investigated whether the brazen murder was linked to organized crime.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a car parked outside a home in Carlingford shortly after 7am on Wednesday.
The person known to the police died at the scene. He has not yet been officially identified.
North Rocks Road has been closed and the public is advised to avoid the area.
Acting Inspector Michael Marinello said detectives were investigating whether the attack was linked to organized crime.
“We do not believe this is a case of mistaken identity. We believe it is not a random attack,” he said.
Marinello said several people who were in the house at the time of the attack helped police. It is unclear whether the man lives at the Carlingford property.
Marinello said police were investigating reports from neighbors that gunshots were heard around 5:30 a.m., an hour and a half before the man’s body was found. The man was shot several times.
Anyone with information about the shooting, dashcam or CCTV footage of the attack is asked to contact police.
“What I can say publicly is that we are exploring every avenue possible regarding this matter,” Marinello said.
“We encourage anyone with information to come forward to help our investigation.”
