Stellan Skarsgård starrer Sentimental Value leads nominations for European film awards | Movies

Norwegian director Joachim Trier is leading the race to victory at the European film awards with five nominations in key categories for his family drama Sentimental Value.

The Cannes Grand Prix winner was nominated for best European film, best screenplay and best director, while Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reins were also nominated for best actor and best actress.

In the film, which will hit cinemas in the UK and other European regions this December, Skarsgård plays a once-famous film director trying to mend ties with his two estranged daughters.

Spanish director Oliver Laxe’s techno thriller Sirāt, set at a party in the Moroccan desert, is another leading film with four nominations. German filmmaker Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Fall, which explores intergenerational traumas in a farmhouse in rural Brandenburg, was nominated for three awards, as was Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi’s This Year’s Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident.

The 15-film shortlist for European film of the year includes five animated films and five documentaries; these include Andres Veiel’s portrait of Nazi collaborator filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl and Igor Bezinović’s Fiume o Morte!, hailed by Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw as “the protofascist Passport to Pimlico”. The movie is also included.

The European film awards, often described as Europe’s answer to the Oscars, are overseen by the European film academy and were announced Tuesday at the Seville European film festival in Spain.

The awards ceremony, previously held in December, will be held in Berlin on January 17 next year, near the peak of US awards seasons, in an effort to provide greater visibility among European audiences.

At the awards held in Lucerne, Switzerland last year, French director Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez achieved an almost clean success, taking four of the five major awards.
