Man in court charged with murder after Uxbridge dog walker killing

An Afghan man accused of murdering a dog walker in west London has been detained.

Safi Dawood appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after being charged with the murder of Wayne Broadhurst as well as two counts of attempted murder.

Officers and paramedics were called to reports of a triple stabbing at Midhurst Gardens in Uxbridge at around 5pm on Monday. A 14-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man were treated at the scene for stab wounds, Broadhurst said.

The man remains in hospital with life-changing injuries and the teenager has been discharged, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Mr Dawood was not known to Broadhurst, who died at the scene, but was known to two other alleged victims.

The 22-year-old, from Midhurst Gardens, was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning.

Dawood appeared in the dock wearing a gray T-shirt and gray trousers and sat bent over during the brief hearing.

The man was arrested at the scene on Monday but required hospital treatment “after suffering a medical crisis”, police said, adding that he was later taken into custody again.

Dawood was taken into custody on Thursday and will appear at the Old Bailey within the next 48 hours.

Neighbors observed a moment of silence in memory of the victim. “I’ve been here for two years and I would see him walking past the window,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named.

He described her as “the last person in the world you would think would go after someone.”

He said she took some flowers and a box of shortbread over for his wife and added: “I still can’t get over it.

“Would the same thing have happened if he had let the dog out after five or 10 minutes?”

One local resident told the Daily Mail: “He’s very well known around here. He’s a very nice guy, very kind and peaceful.”

The general manager of Broadhurst’s workplace paid tribute to him as a “dedicated member of our team”.

Katarina Pohancenikova, of Greener Ealing Ltd, which provides waste services to Ealing Council, said in a statement: “This is a devastating loss. Wayne was a respected and dedicated member of our team and made a real contribution to the work we do and the residents we serve.”

A group of around 100 people gathered to lay flowers and light candles near police tape at the junction between Midhurst Gardens and Leybourne Road on Tuesday night.
