Man in his 60s is fighting for life after being stabbed by ‘Eastern European’ stranger near golf course who approached him from behind then attacked

A man was left fighting for his life after he was allegedly stabbed for no reason by an ‘Eastern European’ attacker who was said to have come up behind him near a golf course in Stafford.
The victim, a man in his 60s, was reportedly walking near the golf course on Thursday evening when he was approached from behind and attacked by a man believed to be in his 20s and described as Eastern European.
He was later found slumped on a bench with stab wounds by a member of the public who raised the alarm and called 999.
Emergency services rushed to Newport Road, near Stafford Castle and Castle Golf and Leisure, shortly before 7pm.
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and remained in critical condition Friday.
Police launched an operation to catch the knife-wielding attacker and said officers ‘did their best to identify and capture the suspect’.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: ‘We were called to Newport Road, near the golf club, at 7pm on Thursday, May 14, following reports of violence.
‘The victim, a man in his 60s, was walking down Redgrave Drive towards Stafford Castle in the Castlefields area when he was approached from behind by an unknown man and attacked.

‘He was found on a bench by a member of the public who raised the alarm.
‘Officers attended alongside colleagues from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, Midlands Air Ambulance and the National Police Air Service.
‘The victim was taken to hospital by ground ambulance. ‘He remains in a critical condition in hospital.’
The suspect was described as being in his mid-to-late 20s, of average build and wearing dark clothing.
There is now a large police presence at the scene and a cordon can be seen around the golf course on the course.
Adrian Morris, who lives near the golf club, said: ‘This is shocking. Actually, it’s not that kind of area.
‘We have a few kids who ride their bikes but nothing anti-social.
‘The location where it happened is a popular route to the castle and many people go there.
The man was found injured with a knife and slumped on a bench by a citizen.
It was stated that the injured man was hospitalized and his condition was critical.
‘It offers a great view of the golf course, it’s really beautiful.
‘I haven’t heard of anything bad happening there. ‘Me and my wife always walk that route.’
Janet Williams, who lives in the same area, said: ‘This is incredible. This is a really quiet and close neighborhood.
‘We’ll all be shocked for a while, it’s truly tragic.’
A spokesman for the golf club said everyone had coped well with the incident but they were ‘clearly shocked by the incident’.
They said the course would remain closed while police needed to investigate.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘We were called to reports of a stabbing in Newport Road.
‘An ambulance, a paramedic, a MERIT trauma doctor, a critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance Intensive Care Car attended the scene.
‘On arrival we encountered a patient, a male. ‘He was treated for serious injuries before being taken to hospital for further treatment.’
