Man indicted on murder charges in deadly shooting at child’s birthday party in Mass.

A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection with a double fatal shooting at a child’s birthday party in Carver in January, the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
A grand jury indicted Nicholas Meuse on two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of 20-year-old Jalen Pina and 27-year-old Benjamin Cowart. prosecutors said in the press release. Meuse was also indicted on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder for wounding two other men during the shooting.
Meuse pleaded not guilty to charges related to the fatal incident during his arraignment in Wareham District Court in January. He is being held without bail.
Around 7:20 p.m. on Jan. 24, several 911 callers reported gunshots in the middle of a child’s birthday party at the Saint John the Baptist Club in Carver, prosecutors previously said. When the first responders arrived at the scene, 4 people with gunshot wounds were identified.
Cowart was pronounced dead a short time later, while Pina died later at the hospital, prosecutors said. The other two people who were shot (a 28-year-old and a 32-year-old) were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Prosecutors said police found Meuse in the woods down the street from the club shortly after the shooting and arrested him. He told investigators he was invited to the party but had prior disagreements with other attendees.
Prosecutors said a confrontation between Meuse and other attendees during the party escalated into a shootout. Meuse told investigators he saw one of the participants reach for his waistband during the confrontation, but police found only a single 9mm handgun at the scene.
