Man shot dead, another wounded near Sydney Olympic Park

A group of burly men dressed in black opened fire on a block of flats in Sydney’s west, killing a man in a brazen attack; police appealed to residents who said they must have seen or heard something.
A man was shot dead and another injured in a targeted attack, believed to be gang-related, on a unit on Shale Street in Lidcombe at around 4am on Monday morning.
A 38-year-old man died at Westmead Hospital after being treated by paramedics for gunshot wounds. The second person was also attacked at the scene and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Inspector Robert Toynton said police were investigating possible links to organized crime.
“This is not a random attack,” he said.
“From what we have discovered so far, there are strong links to organized crime in connection with this murder.”
The shooting took place inside a unit on a high-density residential street bordering Accor Stadium.
While the police were investigating the incident, a crime scene was declared and the public was asked for information.
“Someone must have seen something. Somebody must have heard something. Somebody must have seen a car or seen these criminals leave on foot,” Toynton said.
Some residents who left the area on Monday told the media they heard a large explosion in the early morning hours.
A citizen told reporter They thought the emergency vehicles arriving at the scene were fighting the fire.
“I see a lot of ‘drug addict’ types coming and going… there’s always someone coming in and out of the building,” the resident said.
While detectives led the investigation outside the complex, officers were seen carrying large bags away from the scene.
Police are investigating the cause of the attack while searching for several people believed to be involved.
“The people involved are all described as very fat men wearing black clothing,” Toynton said.
The latest shooting in Sydney comes after two men were taken to hospital following a shooting in Chester Hill on Thursday night.
