Man who allegedly rammed ute into NSW police station dies in custody

A man has died in custody, just days after he allegedly drove his car into police officers before plowing outside a police station.

Donny Hobbs, 67, was arrested after crashing into Mudgee police station in central west NSW on Friday afternoon.

Police allege officers were patrolling Market St in Mudgee when a ute pulled up on them at around 1.30pm that day.

Officers attempted to stop the driver, but he fled, allegedly plowing into another officer and then crashing into the police station.

Mr Hobbs was arrested by police officers at the scene immediately after his vehicle crashed into the station.

He was charged with a number of alleged offences, including destruction of property endangering life, dangerous driving while pursuing police and careless/rageous driving.

He was denied bail when he appeared in court on Saturday.

Mr Hobbs died in custody a few days later and a spokesperson for the NSW Department of Corrections confirmed they were “aware of a 67-year-old prisoner who died at Bathurst Prison on Wednesday”.

“CSNSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident,” the spokesman said.

“Any death in custody will be reported immediately to the NSW Coroner and will be subject to a mandatory, rigorous public inquiry.”

More to come.
