In a statement, police said: “We evacuated an address on Middleton Road as a precaution following the discovery of a suspicious item in an envelope. “All residents appear to be safe and well at this time and we are working with emergency services to ensure everyone’s safety.

“You will see emergency services in the area and we know the concerns this may cause after the events at the nearby Heaton Park synagogue earlier this month.

“However, there is no wider risk at this time. Investigations are ongoing.”
