Manchester shooting: Gunshots in Gay Village as armed police swarm street | UK | News

Six people have been arrested on suspicion of firearms offenses after armed police blocked a street in Manchester’s Gay Village following a shooting.

Police officers were first called to the scene early this morning (Saturday, January 24) to Richmond Street, adjacent to Canal Street in the city centre.

When they arrived at an address, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said officers found a man with an injury to his leg “consistent with a gunshot wound”. Police said a firearm was also found.

The spokesman said: “Six people were arrested on suspicion of firearms offenses following a shooting in the city centre. Officers were called to Richmond Street at around 5am this morning (Saturday, 24 January 2026) to reports of a disturbance. “On arrival at the address, the officer located an adult male with an injury to his leg consistent with a gunshot wound.

“The injured, who were reported to be non-life-threatening and non-life-threatening, were taken to hospital. 6 men, aged between 23 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of assault and firearm offenses and were held in police custody for questioning. Investigations continue.”

Officers are still at the scene and a police cordon is still in place. Forensic studies are being carried out. Inspector Stephen Wiggins said police “believe this was a targeted incident and there is no wider threat to the public”.

He said: “This will undoubtedly be a worrying incident that should wake up not only to those living and working in the city centre, but to the whole of Greater Manchester. “When the call came our officers acted quickly and attended the address in Richmond Street to establish what had happened and detained six people who we believe were involved in the incident. We managed to recover a firearm at the address.

“Since 2023, our colleagues in the Serious Crime Section have removed 168 firearms from our streets across Greater Manchester, underlining how seriously we take gun crime across the force. I would like to reassure the community that we believe this was a targeted incident and there is no wider threat to the public.”
