Conservative Party plans vote on release of Mandelson review papers
Political editor David Maddox reports:
Kemi Badenoch is considering forcing a vote on the release of documents relating to the review Peter Mandelson received before his appointment as ambassador to the United States in January last year.
The appointment comes despite warnings from the Donald Trump administration about Mandelson’s ties to China and his ties to convicted pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Independent It also revealed that MI6 and security agencies had failed to get past Mandelson in the investigation process, and that they had also raised concerns about China and Epstein.
The Conservative Party has an opposition vote tomorrow and it is now understood Sir Keir Starmer and his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney are considering a vote to release review documents to provide transparency as to why they delayed the appointment.

Mandelson insists Epstein’s money did not influence his actions in office
Lord Mandelson insisted Jeffrey Epstein’s money did not influence his actions in office.
In an interview with the Times before the latest allegations emerged, Lord Mandelson admitted he made an “error of judgment” in funding an osteopathy course for Reinaldo Avila da Silva, the husband of Epstein’s peer, in 2009, when the government was dealing with the global financial crisis.
The files contain reference to a £10,000 transfer from Epstein.
“Looking back, it was clearly a mistake in our collective judgment for Reinaldo to accept this offer. It was not a consequential decision at the time,” he said.
Lord Mandelson rejected the suggestion that Epstein’s lobbying to change banker bonus rules left him open to bribery allegations.
“There was incessant debate throughout the sector about reforming banks and how to strike the right balance of regulation,” Lord Mandelson said.
“The idea that awarding Reinaldo a fellowship in osteopathy would influence my or anyone else’s views on banking policy is ludicrous.”
The expert insisted he had “absolutely no recollection” of receiving payments totaling $75,000 (about £55,000) from Epstein between 2003 and 2004, as bank details in files released by the US Department of Justice indicate.

According to files, Mandelson ‘asked Epstein for help with a car in Boston’
Senior correspondent Alex Ross reports:
As Lord Mandelson faces increasing scrutiny over his dealings with Jeffrey Epstein, more is emerging from files released by the US Department of Justice on Friday.
An email emerged suggesting that the colleague asked Epstein’s team for help finding a car during a visit to Boston in 2012, but that Epstein declined the offer.
This comes four years after Epstein served 13 months of an 18-month prison sentence for soliciting a minor into prostitution, for which he was registered as a sex offender.
In an email dated May 29, 2012, from his assistant Lesley Groff to Epstein, he says: “Peter Mandelson wants me to help out at a car service in Boston. I can rent him a car from the company we always use… Did you want to pay for the car?”
Epstein responded eight minutes later: “No.”
It is unclear why Lord Mandelson asked for help with a car in Boston, Massachusetts. Two days after the email, the annual Bilderberg conference began in Chantilly, Virginia, which the friend reportedly attended.
The event, which brought together global business leaders and politicians, took place between 31 May and 3 June 2012.

Liberal Democrats call for national inquiry into Epstein’s influence ‘at the heart of the British political establishment’
Political correspondent Millie Cooke reports:
The Liberal Democrats have called for a statutory public inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein and his influence “at the heart of the British political establishment”.
It comes after the Epstein dossiers claimed Lord Peter Mandelson had leaked market-sensitive information from the heart of government and also suggested that Epstein had ties to Putin and Russia.
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said: “The victims of this scandal and their families deserve the full truth and those responsible deserve to be held to account.
“The government must launch a full-scale legal investigation into how a convicted pedophile suspected of links to Vladimir Putin gained access to the heart of the British political establishment.
“Highly market-sensitive information was leaked by a minister who acted as a mole in Whitehall, Epstein said, dangerously exposing our institutions and posing a serious threat to national security.
“A full public inquiry, with the power to challenge witnesses and access messages and emails, is vital. Only full transparency can restore public trust, ensure justice for victims and prevent this level of corruption from happening again.”

Labor does not want to reveal details of Mandelson inquiry
Political editor David Maddox reports:
There is a noticeable lack of detail about some key aspects of what happened with Lord Mandelson.
Labor was not willing to say when peer disciplinary proceedings were launched into the Jeffrey Epstein files. We also don’t know exactly who wanted this or what specifically it was about.
There is a suspicion in Parliament that there has been a rush to portray the prime minister as taking long overdue action.
