Eric Swalwell ends campaign for California governor over sexual harassment allegations
Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell has suspended his campaign for governor of California amid sexual harassment allegations. The Department of Homeland Security is also investigating allegations that Swalwell employed a Brazilian nanny without a work permit and paid approximately $89,700 in campaign funds between 2021 and 2025. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office is investigating sexual assault allegations against embattled Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat who suspended his campaign to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom after they went public last week.
Separately, the House Ethics Committee announced its own investigation into sexual harassment allegations on Monday.
A former employee accused him of sexually assaulting her while she was blackout on two occasions, once in New York City in 2024, according to the report. San Francisco Chronicle Released Friday.

The unnamed woman told the paper she was hired in 2019 at the age of 21 to work in the Swalwell regional office, and claimed her married boss began stalking her weeks later. She reportedly claimed he sent her nude photos via Snapchat and asked for oral sex in the parking lot on his way home from an event. On another occasion, she claimed she woke up naked in Swalwell’s bed after he stopped drinking.
The New York investigation stems from separate allegations in the article from a time when he was no longer an employee of Swalwell’s office. They allegedly met for drinks after a premiere in Manhattan on April 25, 2024, around 11:30 p.m.

He claimed he only remembered “brief snippets of the night,” including saying “no” to Swalwell, according to the report. Three days later, she reportedly told a friend that she believed she had been sexually assaulted.
“I have no idea who will be governor of California, but I think people have a right to know whether the person running a state that has been a safe haven for so many women actually treats women with dignity and protects their rights,” the Chronicle quoted her as saying. he said. “No one protected me from him, and so I need to protect other young women like me who aspire to work in this field and who he might prey on.”

But he claimed he kept quiet for years out of fear of retaliation.

Swalwell denied the allegations and apologized to his wife in a video posted online. He said he planned to fight the charges but still withdrew from the California governor’s race.
“I will fight the serious, false allegations made,” he wrote in X Sunday. “But this is my fight, not a campaign’s.”
