Manipur aims to resettle 40,000 IDPs by March

Manipur Government has intensified efforts to resettle over 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) by March, State Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel said on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

They belong to nearly 10,000 families who have been displaced since ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities broke out on May 3, 2023.

Mr. Goel said the government has so far rehabilitated more than 3,700 families comprising 16,500 people. The state has released around ₹124 crore towards the initiative.

The government has emphasized a holistic approach that aims not only to relocate families from relief camps but also to restore livelihoods, education and the general well-being of the community. “Our priority is the safe and sustainable return of IDPs to normal life,” Mr. Goel said.

As of December 2025, more than 2,200 families, or approximately 10,000 displaced persons, have been resettled. He said that under special PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin), around 7,000 houses have been approved to replace completely damaged houses and construction is going on at various places.

A State Level Committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary and comprising senior officials including the Commissioner of the Home Ministry and the Director General of Police, oversees the rehabilitation process. District level committees under District Magistrates conduct regular inspections to ensure smooth resettlement.
