Manipur declares 3-day mourning for BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte

Guwahati: The Manipur government has declared three-day state mourning from Sunday as a mark of respect to BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who passed away on Saturday. He was the first MLA to fall victim to the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023.

Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh reached New Delhi late on Saturday evening and visited the hospital in Gurugram to pay his last respects. A prayer ceremony was also held in the presence of MLAs and leaders of the Delhi-based Zomi community.

Valte, who later became a banker, suffered multiple injuries when he was attacked by protesters in Imphal in May 2023. Valte, who belonged to the Zomi tribe, was receiving treatment in New Delhi.
After the attack, he was confined to a wheelchair. Family members had previously claimed that Valte was attacked by the Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol (AT).

Valte represented Thanlon assembly constituency in Churachandpur. Valte was flown from Imphal to Delhi by air ambulance on February 8 after complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain. The CM had made necessary arrangements for the air ambulance.
