Mara Flavia Araujo: Young triathlete and influencer dies during swimming leg of Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas

A young athlete and influencer died while competing in a grueling triathlon event over the weekend.

Mara Flavia Araujo, 38, disappeared during the swim leg of the Memorial Hermann Ironman event outside Houston Texas on Saturday.

The Brazilian national’s body was later found by emergency dive teams who searched for hours in the murky waters of Lake Woodlands.

The challenging Ironman event consists of a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42.2 km run.

Event organizers confirmed Ms. Araujo’s death in a statement posted on Ironman in Texas’ Facebook page.

“We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swimming portion of today’s IRONMAN Texas triathlon,” the post reads.

“We send our deepest condolences to the athlete’s family and friends and will offer our support as they navigate this difficult time. We express our gratitude to first responders for their assistance.”

Just days before her death, Ms. Araujo expressed her excitement about the upcoming competition to her 60,000 followers by uploading a photo of herself at swimming practice.

The caption of the Instagram post was “Just one more day of work.”

Praise for the young athlete poured in from the comments section, with many saying he was an inspiration.

“What a powerful statement 4 days ago… 😢 Rest in peace,” one person wrote.

Another added: “The feeling of losing someone so special to you is indescribable, rest in peace Mara! My condolences to the entire family!”

A third said: “Oh my god I got chills reading this after hearing about your passing. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family.”

The sports fan’s cause of death was not disclosed, but her friend Luis Taveira claimed that Ms. Araujo had been struggling with health issues in the lead-up to the event, the outlet reported.

“He was sick before the trip, he wasn’t well,” he said.

“My wife and I talked to him and said he was too weak for this race, but when we spoke to him a few days ago he insisted he was fine.

“I still can’t believe what happened.”
