Ukraine Agrees To Peace Deal Framework With Russia Amid Ongoing Negotiations And EU Concerns | World News

Ukraine has agreed to the framework of a proposed agreement to end the war with Russia, a senior US official said on Tuesday, even as President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed many issues remained unresolved, CNN reported.


The official, who met with Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi under the name of US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, said, “The Ukrainians accepted the peace agreement. There are some small details that need to be resolved, but they accepted the peace agreement.”


Additionally, Ukraine’s national security minister, Rustem Umerov, wrote in X that both sides “reached a common understanding on the basic terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva.” He added that Kiev now expects support from European partners in the next steps and that Zelensky is looking forward to arranging a visit to the United States to “complete the final steps” and reach an agreement with President Donald Trump.

Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky said “solid results” had been obtained from the Geneva talks, but said “there is a lot of work ahead of us” and signaled that Ukraine was not yet ready to announce the final version of the talks.


The original peace plan prepared by the United States includes many ideas that were previously rejected in past rounds of negotiations. Calls on Ukraine to accept limits on the size of its armed forces, abandon its goal of joining NATO and give up some territory; These are all long-standing demands from Russia, from which President Vladimir Putin is trying to extract maximum concessions.


The proposal also calls on Kiev to hand over significant parts of the Donbas region, which Russia claims to have annexed but does not fully control. The region includes a belt of fortified cities and towns that are central to Ukraine’s defense strategy.


Zelensky has repeatedly rejected Russian demands that Ukraine give up eastern Donbas in exchange for control of some Russian-held regions in Kherson and Zaporizhia.


European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine’s borders “cannot be changed by force” and warned against any peace plan that would weaken Ukraine’s armed forces. He said no agreement should impose restrictions that would expose Ukraine to future attacks.


Von der Leyen also emphasized that the EU’s role in securing peace should be “fully reflected” and noted that Ukraine should retain the right to decide its own future. “They have chosen a European destiny,” she said, adding that this path begins with reconstruction and deeper integration with Europe’s single market and defense industrial base.
