UN reiterates need for freedom of navigation in Strait of Hormuz but opposes military activity
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the United Nations was “still trying to fully understand” what exactly was the point of US statements saying the vital Strait of Hormuz was open.
He said that the news of mutual fire in the strait, which carries approximately 20 percent of the world’s crude oil, and of the United Arab Emirates intercepting Iranian missiles were “worrying”.
“There’s not a lot of clarity at this point, but what we don’t want to see is a return to direct kinetic activity in this area,” Dujarric said.
“We need to see a return to centuries-old common law practice, namely freedom of navigation in these waters,” he told U.N. reporters on Monday.
