Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson beats progressive challenger

Maryland Democratic Senate chairman Bill Ferguson has beaten back a surprisingly serious challenge from a progressive candidate who used the nickname “Captain Bobby” on social media in the state’s most closely watched race.
While state Senate races rarely garner national attention, Ferguson’s opponent, activist Bobby LaPin, has attracted a lot of attention for his unusual online presence, in which he has repeatedly accused Ferguson of being too established.
LaPin, a former military member, charter boat owner and social media personality, introduced himself to voters by telling them, “I’m a Bernie Sanders,” while calling Ferguson “Chuck Schumer.” News from America.
On Tuesday night, Ferguson fended off LaPin’s challenge and won with 56.6% of the vote to LaPin’s 43.4%. Ferguson’s primary victory in the deep-blue Maryland Senate District 46, centered on Baltimore, virtually guarantees he will retain his seat.

LaPin was particularly critical of Ferguson’s opposition to the redistricting bill that would eliminate Maryland’s only Republican congressional seat. LaPin’s campaign website criticized Ferguson, saying he “single-handedly prevented Maryland from responding to Trump’s attack on democracy by blocking redistricting efforts supported by the U.S. Congressional Democratic Caucus, the Maryland State Senate, and Governor Wes Moore.”
As president of the Maryland Senate, Ferguson rebuffed pressure from Moore and national Democratic leaders to redraw Maryland’s congressional districts. Ferguson reportedly called the proposed map “objectively unconstitutional.” Washington Post. He also noted that “the legal risks are too high, the timeline for action is precarious, and the downside risk for Democrats is catastrophic.” WTOP.

The move faced heavy criticism from many Democrats. Questions arose when Maryland Governor Wes Moore blatantly refused to support Ferguson, even though Ferguson was one of the state’s most powerful Democrats.
Despite the controversy and rumors, Ferguson had a clear money advantage over LaPin.

Ferguson, 43, has held the state Senate seat since 2011. He was just 27 years old when he was first elected, becoming the youngest state senator in Maryland history. He was unanimously elected president of the Maryland Senate in 2020, making him the second-youngest person to hold the office in the state’s history. Ferguson’s background is in education and he earned a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.
