Mass shooting after soccer game in Mexico kills 11

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured when gunmen opened fire on a football field in central Mexico.
Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto said in his statement on social platforms that the armed men came at the end of the football match.
10 people died at the scene and 1 person died in the hospital where he was taken. The mayor said a woman and a child were among the injured.
Prieto said the attack was part of a “crime wave” in the city and appealed to Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum for help in containing the violence.
The Guanajuato state attorney’s office said it was investigating and coordinating with federal authorities to strengthen security in the area.
Guanajuato had Mexico’s highest homicide total last year. A local gang, Santa Rosa de Lima, is fighting the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
“Unfortunately, there are criminal groups that are trying to subdue the authorities, and that is something they are not going to be able to do,” the mayor said.
Overall, the Mexican government says the country’s 2025 homicide rate is the lowest since 2016, at 17.5 murders per 100,000 people, but analysts warn the figures may not fully reflect the country’s violence.
