The promising footballer suddenly collapsed and died in 1992 after playing football in the garden with his father, former Leeds United star Terry Yorath.

It was later revealed that Daniel, who was four years younger than Gabby, died as a result of an undiagnosed heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which the heart thickens for no apparent reason.

Gabby spoke openly about how this devastating loss ‘defined her youth’ and how, more than three decades later, she and her family are still coming to terms with the ‘consequences’ of Daniel’s sudden death.

‘It was an absolute disaster. “It was like a sledgehammer coming down and smashing the family into a million pieces,” he told The Game Changers podcast.

He continued: ‘Even if someone dies suddenly at 78, they feel young, but they are 78, so when a child dies that young, it’s clear there’s such negativity in the whole family.

‘It defined the rest of our youth and how the family has progressed since those years, and in many ways it left its mark.

‘It was a really difficult time for everyone and the consequences still linger to this day.’

After welcoming her own children, Gabby also explained that her older brother’s sudden death at the age of 15 left her worried about her son Reuben as he approached his 16th birthday, because she was “afraid I would repeat history.”

He added: ‘Even a few years later I could still find myself crying. When I started working in football I was obsessed with players’ birth dates because they would be Daniel’s age. And I knew he could play in that game.

“What kind of player would he be?” you wonder. I wonder if he’s ever had a girlfriend or met someone he wants to marry, or if he has kids now.’
