Former daytime talk show host Maury Povich laughed off former MSNBC host Joy Reid’s suggestion Monday that Senate Democrats “play by the rules” and “don’t play politics” like Republicans.
“onOn par with Maury Povich” podcast, Povich noted that if the Democratic Party regains control of the Senate after the 2026 midterm elections, it would effectively halt President Donald Trump’s chances of appointing another Supreme Court justice, similar to how Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., blocked then-President Barack Obama from appointing a replacement after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016.
Reid argued otherwise and insisted that Democratic politicians are different from Republicans.

“Democrats don’t play politics like Republicans,” Reid said.
“Oh, come on, Joy, please,” Povich interrupted, chuckling at the comment.
“They don’t. They don’t. The Democrats are playing by the Marquess de Queensberry rules. They are not rule breakers,” Reid argued.
“You’re trying to tell me whether Democrats will take the Senate in 2027. [Justice Samuel] “With Alito retiring and Trump picking a Supreme Court justice, are the Democrats going to hold a hearing and actually confirm him?” Povich asked.

“I think it would happen,” Reid said.
“No chance,” Povich responded.
Povich noted the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown as Senate Democrats protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies, even though the party does not hold a majority of seats. Reid claimed this only happened after Democrats “gave up too many times” due to other issues and government shutdowns.

“Democrats are giving in and trying to play by the rules. Republicans don’t care about the rules. They’re rewriting the rules,” Reid said.

Despite his views on political parties, Reid claimed to Povich that his partisanship could “bleed out” when evaluating candidates.

“I’ve always felt like I had the ability to step outside of my partisanship as a decision-making citizen, and I also felt like I could step outside of that as a journalist and evaluate a good person or a good candidate independently of party,” Reid said.
