May Day 2026 explained: Why is Labour Day celebrated?

The story so far: May Day is celebrated on May 1 to honor the working class and commemorate their struggle for fair wages and better working conditions.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) has emphasized the importance of renewing commitment to social justice in 2024. ILO Highlighted the daily challenges facing workers, both existing and emergingand called for action to ensure that economic growth translates into better living standards and working conditions for all. “As we navigate the complexities of our time, including the rapid evolution of workplaces due to climate change and technological advances, our Labor Day celebrations this year carry a sense of urgency in renewing our commitment to social justice. These challenges have not only tested our resilience but also underscored the indispensability of joint efforts and solidarity in improving the well-being of workers across all sectors,” he added.
