Maya Jama’s ex-boyfriend Rúben Dias has broken his silence on their split and insisted he ‘did not cheat’ on the Love Island star in a statement on Instagram on Friday.
The footballer has been accused of sending late-night follow requests to a string of gorgeous influencers while he was still romantically involved with Maya.
Rúben denied cheating on the TV personality, saying Maya “deserves all the respect in the world.”
He wrote: ‘When my 85-year-old grandfather asked me if I was cheating on my girlfriend because he saw it over and over on the news, I feel like that’s where I draw the line as to what is acceptable and what isn’t.
‘Maya and I have always had a relationship of mutual respect. No line was crossed on this issue.
‘A lie told often enough can start to feel like the truth, and so I tell you this, I did not cheat, nor did I ever have the intention or desire to cheat. I believe Maya deserves all the respect in the world.

‘The reasons for our separation are private and our own and we have both handled the situation very maturely. Since my personal life concerns only me, I have always preferred to remain silent on these issues.
‘But I also believe it’s wrong to lie to people and project the opposite image of someone just for clickbait.
‘Respect me, respect Maya, and understand that one doesn’t always have to betray the other for a relationship to end.’
The Portuguese centre-back, who is currently celebrating a domestic double with City after winning the League and FA Cup in manager Pep Guardiola’s final season, has since been accused of “dipping his toe” on social media before breaking off the romance.
A more subtle alternative to direct messaging, this trend often involves one social media user following another in the hopes of gauging interest. If there is no response, they immediately stop pursuing and move on.
Rúben is understood to have used this technique in March, weeks before his relationship with Maya ended, after encountering attractive model and bridal designer Catarina Duraes online.
But after just over 24 hours, he unfollowed her after she couldn’t follow him back.
Months earlier, he had used the same tactic on Scottish brunette Claire in November 2025, but there were no allegations that the footballer was unfaithful during his relationship with Maya.
A source told Sun: ‘It may seem like a simple stalking online but that’s the intention behind it; stalking someone to see if they interact, and always doing it late at night, is a seedy thing.
‘It shows you sitting scrolling through Instagram and what happens if they follow back or DM?’
Since his split, Rúben has reportedly briefly pursued Australian Love Island star Amelia Marni, who lives in London and has a boyfriend.

A gorgeous blonde TikTok influencer named Georgia also received the same treatment, but there is no suggestion that Rúben ever met these women or interacted with them further.
Social media users have been tracking the footballer’s fingertips and claim he tends to follow women, then unfollow them the next day, The Sun reports.
Following the news of their separation, Maya and Rúben deleted all photos of each other from their respective Instagram accounts.
Over the weekend, Maya remained silent on social media as he lifted the FA Cup with his City teammates, despite previously supporting him in matches.
Fans were quick to note the timing of the departure, as Manchester City missed out on another Premier League title to rivals Arsenal.
The Daily Mail has contacted Maya’s representatives for comment.
