Mbappe’s Tribute to Outgoing Coach Deschamps

Miami: “We should have given you a better ending, but we failed,” said France captain Kylian Mbappe, paying a heartfelt tribute to Didier Deschamps ahead of the France-England FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place match on Saturday (local time), the last game in charge of the coach.

France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final ended with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 semi-final.

Making an emotional post on X, Mbappe thanked Didier Deschamps for his 14 years of coaching France and said that the players were disappointed that they could not say a better farewell to him. He praised Deschamps for playing a key role in the revival of the national team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent France under his leadership and wished him success in the next chapter of his career.

“Today is your last dance. You’re the one who gave us so much. We should have given you a better ending, but we couldn’t. It’s hard to put into words what you brought for 14 years, you played such a big role in the revival of this team. People don’t always know how to appreciate your greatness, but time and history will sort it out,” he said.

Mbappe said: “Thank you for giving me the chance and opportunity to represent my country on the biggest stage for so many years. I feel privileged to be able to stand next to one of our country’s greatest legends and I carry only wonderful memories of everything we have experienced and achieved together. I wish you the best in your new adventure and thank you again for everything you have put into this jersey that means so much to us.”

Deschamps, who took charge of France in 2012, led the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup championship and another final in 2022. The 2026 season ended with a defeat to Spain in the semi-finals.
