Bangladesh Politics: In a significant development in Bangladesh’s political scenario, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleeda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman is planning to return to Bangladesh on December 25 ahead of the General Elections to be held in the country.
The homecoming of the former Prime Minister’s son comes at a time when Bangladesh is witnessing protests and high-profile shootings. Just days after the killing of Bangladeshi activist Inqaib Moncho leader Osman Hadi, another political leader of Jatiya Sramik Shakti of the National Citizen Party (NCP) was shot in broad daylight in Khulna on Monday.

Who is Tarık Rahman?
Tarique Rahman lives in exile in London. He was arrested in 2007 and after being released from prison the following year, in 2008, he went to the UK with his family for medical treatment and has remained there ever since.

Tarique Rahman’s mother and BNP President Khaleda Zia is receiving treatment in a hospital in Dhaka.
Meanwhile, speculations are rife in political circles about the timing of Tariq Rahman’s return ahead of the general elections. According to ANI, BNP is making special arrangements to celebrate his homecoming as he is expected to play a key role in the party’s campaign in the upcoming elections.
ANI, citing Bangladesh Newspaper Prothom Alo, reported that Tarique Rahman had applied for a travel permit at the Bangladesh High Commission in London.
Meanwhile, Hindu religious organizations and minority rights groups staged a demonstration in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday to condemn the lynching and murder of Dipu Chandra Das, a young Hindu in Mymensingh, over allegations of rising religious extremism, attacks on minorities and administrative inaction.
