Meet The Secret Weapon: Rama Duwaji, The Gen Z Artist And Wife Behind Zohran Mamdani’s Iconic NYC Mayor Campaign Look | World News

While Zohran Mamdani’s fiery Democratic Socialist message dominated the headlines during her successful mayoral campaign in New York City, a quiet, creative force was operating behind the scenes: her husband, 28-year-old Syrian American artist Rama Duwaji. Although he stayed away from the spotlight, his strategic influence on the aesthetic and digital tone of his campaign was clearly evident.

Although Duwaji was an accomplished illustrator and ceramicist, she did not attend debates, rallies, or give even a single interview, thus focusing on her husband’s political platform.

Architect of the Campaign’s Visual Identity

It was Duwaji’s creative expertise that helped create the modern, grassroots image synonymous with the Mamdani campaign.

Brand Aesthetics: Helped complete the campaign’s distinctive color palette, which became instantly recognizable throughout the city. The brand identity consisted of a bold color mix inspired by New York City staples: Metrocard yellow, Mets blue, and firehouse red.

Design and Tone: Led the development of the campaign’s strong bodega-style typography and overall visual storytelling, developing both the social media strategy and digital tone.

Despite Mamdani’s intense campaigning, Duwaji remained a key source of support, even though his efforts to relax caused the candidate to doze off while watching programs such as Temptation Island, according to sources close to the couple.

From Houston to Astoria: Duwaji’s History

Born in Houston to Syrian parents, Duwaji grew up in Texas before moving to Dubai at the age of nine. His artistic journey took him from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Art in Qatar and Richmond to a master’s degree in illustration as a visual essay at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

How They Met: Duwaji and Mamdani met on the dating app Hinge in 2021, shortly after he was elected to the New York State Assembly. Their discussions about mayoral bids had begun long before their 2024 accession.

Argument: The two married in a civil ceremony earlier this year, followed by a celebration in Uganda. His previous appearances in Dubai had drawn criticism from political rivals for the event being too rich and a hypocritical stance for a socialist candidate. Friends suggest he was unimpressed and continued his behind-the-scenes support.

If Mamdani takes office, Duwaji, 28, would be the first member of Generation Z to serve as New York City’s first lady, but she has not indicated whether she will take on any official role.
