Meghan Markle makes major U-turn ‘to protect the monarchy’ | Royal | News

Meghan Markle has reportedly abandoned plans to write her memoirs in order to “uphold the standards of the monarchy”.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, is understood to have been offered a number of lucrative publishing deals to publish her book after the commercial triumph of Prince Harry’s Spare. She expressed her desire to follow in her husband’s footsteps during a candid podcast last year.

However, it has now been revealed that Meghan chose not to continue with the concept. A source revealed: “Meghan and Harry are careful about everything they do and say to uphold the standards of the monarchy. [memoirs] the kind of projects they don’t want to do.”

While Spare is among the fastest-selling non-fiction books ever, it has sparked controversy within the royal family, particularly over Harry’s alleged rift with his brother Prince William.

The most surprising parts of the book include an alleged physical fight with William, Harry confessing to killing 25 Taliban members in Afghanistan, and the duke describing how he lost his virginity to an old woman in a field. Spare, which was published in January 2023, increased tensions amid claims that Prince Harry’s relationship with his family had deteriorated.

But he and Meghan now appear keen to avoid any additional controversy. Conjectures remain regarding the couple’s possible return to the group, with claims linking them to “half in, half out” arrangements.

“They’re doing everything they can to not upset the royal family. Anyone who does business with them knows there are restrictions, but it’s hurting the creativity of the project. They’re determined to have creative control and final editing… and the things they can’t say limit things,” the source told OK! Magazine.

Recent developments support the insider’s claims. The Sussexes attended Kris Jenner’s extravagant 70th birthday bash in November last year but allegedly demanded some of the photos be deleted from Kim Kardashian’s Instagram page.

Sources say this represents a change in strategy for Meghan and Harry, whose income streams have dwindled since the Netflix deal was signed.

But Meghan, a mother of two, has a license to write. The source added: “This is the area where Meghan has a lot of financial clout.” The Duchess of Sussex published her children’s book, The Bench, in June 2021, nearly a year after she and her husband left the UK for the US.

Launched shortly after Princess Lilibet’s birth, the publication quickly made its way onto the prestigious New York Times Best Sellers list in the children’s illustrated books category. Harry then wrote his nonfiction work, which was published less than two years later.
