Meghan tells MasterChef Australia Harry is a ‘charmer’
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, described her husband as “charming” after making a surprise video call during his appearance on MasterChef Australia.
Meghan appeared as a guest judge on the 18th season of the cooking show Sunday; where contestants were challenged to transform a staple ingredient into a dish “fit for a duchesses.”
The couple spoke during the judging portion of the show as Prince Harry called to check in
“Hello, love,” he said after producers handed him the phone, introduced Harry to the contestants and judges, and showed him the dishes.
“My husband is here,” she told the stunned crowd.
The episode was filmed during Meghan and Harry’s week-long trip to Australia in April.
The couple engaged in philanthropic and business activities in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.
The Duchess praised contestant Aaron Kher’s dish but joked it was “too much” spicy for Harry, who greeted the Australian group with “Have a Good Day.”
“He’s a wizard, isn’t he?” he said after the phone call ended.
Asked about cooking for her family, Meghan said there are “so many palates to satisfy” and that her children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are “great eaters” who love Brussels sprouts.
“The children are especially interested in the garden,” she said, describing how the family often prepares meals together.
Meghan added: “I think family time is really key to connecting through food, so we cook as much as we can together, we do it all the time.”
She said her husband preferred “meat, potatoes and cream sauce” due to his British education, while the California-born duchess preferred grilled meat, fish and citrus fruits.
A previous announcement from the Sussexes stated that the new season would feature some of the “most impressive amateur cooks the competition has ever seen”.
Harry and Meghan’s visit to Australia also included meetings with mental health charities, Invictus veterans and survivors, and emergency service staff from the Bondi Beach terror attack.
“We love Australia. We had such emotional, wonderful times. We were here almost eight years ago,” the Duchess said of her visit.
“At that time we announced we were pregnant with Archie. It’s full circle.”
The Press Association understands Meghan was not paid to appear on the cooking programme.
