Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti sparked controversy by calling India “Linchistan”. “Not India, Bharat or Hindustan. Your name is Lynchistaan,” Mufti said in a post on X, tagging a picture of the man who was lynched in Odisha after rumors spread that the man was an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh. Iltija’s statement came a day after a migrant worker, identified as a Bengali Muslim, was killed in Odisha.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP Spokesperson Abhijeet Jasrotia heavily criticized the PDP leader and accused him of selective outrage. “He only talks about lynching Muslims and not Hindus,” he said. Juel Sheikh, 19, was killed in Sambalpur during a mass attack in which his colleague, who claimed they were attacked after being asked for identification documents because they suspected they were Bangladeshi citizens, was also attacked.

What happened to Juel Sheikh?

The incident took place on Christmas Eve in Shanti Nagar area, where Sheikh and other migrant workers were working at a construction site. The incident took place when six men approached the migrant workers and asked for a bidi (Indian cigarette) and then their Aadhaar card before carrying out an attack, leaving him dead and several others injured.

Majhar Khan, another injured worker from West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, said the attackers first asked them for bidi and then asked them to see their Aadhaar card. “The miscreants first asked us for bidi and then asked me to show our Aadhaar cards. Then they hit Juel Sheikh’s head against a hard object,” Khan told news agency PTI.
