Days after India’s biggest Aviation crisis, IndiGo beats Air India, Air India Express in…

According to official data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), IndiGo surpassed Air India and Air India Express in international passenger traffic in the July-September 2025 quarter.

According to official data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), IndiGo surpassed Air India and Air India Express in international passenger traffic in the July-September 2025 quarter.

Quarterly data shows that IndiGo carried a total of 41.36 lakh international passengers, including 19.88 lakh passengers arriving in India and 21.47 lakh passengers leaving the country.

In comparison, Air India carried 11.79 lakh passengers to and 11.97 lakh passengers from India, while Air India Express recorded 8.08 lakh arrivals and 9.13 lakh departures. Even when viewed together, Air India group’s international passenger volumes in the quarter fell short of IndiGo’s standalone figures.

This change came after Air India reduced its flights following the plane crash in June. This reduction in flights created capacity which IndiGo quickly filled by increasing flights on key international routes.

The AI171 tragedy occurred on June 12 when an Air India flight crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 229 passengers, 12 crew and 260 people, including 19 on the ground.

The Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) later released the preliminary report on the tragic accident; This report outlined the harrowing series of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff. The report stated that both of the plane’s engines shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, resulting in a catastrophic loss of thrust and a rapid descent.

The crash remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent history in India, leaving a profound impact on the families of the victims and the aviation community.

Meanwhile, IndiGo, which recently faced operational disruptions, is now gradually stabilising, operating over 2,050 flights with minimal cancellations and maintaining connectivity across its network.
