Messi Returns To MetLife Stadium After A Decade

new York : Ten years after one of the most heartbreaking moments of his illustrious career, Lionel Messi returns to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey with the opportunity to rewrite history when Argentina take on Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday (local time).

For the Argentina captain, the title challenge is more than just a fight for football’s biggest prize. Marca reported that it was a flashback to a night in which he endured the pain of defeat against Chile in the 2016 Copa America Centenario final, ending with a missed penalty, tears on the bench and the shock announcement that he would retire from international football.

Memories of that night continue to make MetLife Stadium one of the most emotionally significant venues of Messi’s career, Goal.com reports.

Messi, who was emotional after Argentina’s penalty defeat against Chile, said, “Everything is over for me in the national team, I tried hard.”

The announcement stunned the football world and sparked a nationwide campaign urging the then 29-year-old to reconsider. Among those pleading with Messi was 15-year-old Enzo Fernandez, who posted an emotional message that resurfaced on social media ahead of Sunday’s final.

“Do whatever you want, Lionel, but please consider staying. Stay for the fun, these people took that away from you,” Fernandez wrote in 2016. Ten years later, Fernandez is no longer a fan writing to his idol, but one of Argentina’s most influential midfielders, standing alongside Messi as Lionel Scaloni’s side chase a second successive World Cup title.

Ahead of Argentina is the Spanish team, the tournament’s standout defensive unit. Luis de la Fuente’s men conceded just one goal throughout the competition, becoming the first team to keep a clean sheet in six matches in the men’s singles World Cup.

Starting with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, Spain achieved six consecutive wins by eliminating Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France on the way to the final.

The European champions are also unbeaten in 37 matches in the competition and are trying to win only their second FIFA World Cup title following their victory in 2010.

Argentina, meanwhile, showed remarkable resilience throughout the knockout stages. The defending champions have repeatedly overcome difficult situations, including a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-final, when Enzo Fernandez equalized before Lautaro Martinez struck the injury-time winner.

Scaloni’s team have won 14 consecutive matches, equaling the longest winning streak by a South American country, and are aiming to become the second team after Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.

The two countries enter the final with a balanced head-to-head record of six wins and two draws. Their only previous World Cup meeting took place in 1966; Argentina won 2-1, while Spain achieved a memorable 6-1 victory in their last meeting, an international friendly in 2018.

As he awaits football’s biggest prize, the spotlight will inevitably remain on Messi. Nearly a decade after leaving MetLife Stadium in tears and questioning his international future, the Argentine captain has one last chance to turn the venue of his greatest heartbreak into the stage for another unforgettable chapter in his extraordinary career.
