The Met Office has issued an updated weather warning for parts of the UK as Storm Dave approaches. A warning was initially issued for the Easter weekend (April 4 and 5), but the forecaster has now issued an updated yellow wind warning that includes conditions associated with the storm.

The warning covers North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, Yorkshire and the Humber. All affected local areas are listed below. High winds are expected to affect areas and the warning will last from 5pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday.

The updated Yellow warning for wind was announced at 9:54 a.m. on Friday, April 3. The Met Office’s forecast said: “Storm Dave, a rapidly deepening low pressure area, will pass Scotland on Saturday night before entering the North Sea on Sunday.

“Although there remains some uncertainty about the exact path and shape of Storm Dave, strong winds are expected from the southwest. Winds of 50-60 miles per hour are expected in a fairly wide area, and 60-70 miles per hour in more open areas.

“The strongest winds are expected on Saturday evening, with a brief chance of 70-80 mph gusts, particularly across northern England and southern Scotland. Large waves could lead to some hazardous conditions on windy coasts.”

In their warning, the Met Office also said: “People cope better with power outages when they are prepared in advance. This is easy to do: consider packing flashlights and batteries, a mobile phone power supply and other essential items.”

“If you’re on the coast, stay safe in stormy weather by watching out for big waves. Big waves breaking even from the shore can sweep you off your feet and sweep you out to sea. If you’re walking near cliffs, be careful, know your route and keep your dogs on leash. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

The Met Office’s forecast for the weekend is: “Storm Dave brings very strong winds of up to 90mph from late Saturday until Easter Sunday morning, which may cause some damage and disruption to travel.” he said. Areas covered by the warnings include Northern Ireland, the north of the United Kingdom, Manchester and Liverpool from Scotland to the north-east of England, and parts of north-west Wales. Meteorology also warned of “life-threatening” for these regions.

“Injuries and danger to life are possible from flying debris,” the forecaster said, and also added that “injuries and danger to life may occur from large waves and beach materials thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”
