Met Office issues amber weather warning for extreme heat ahead of UK heatwave
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for extreme temperatures ahead of a heatwave expected in England over the weekend.
The weather warning covers the south west, south east and east of England, with parts of south Wales also affected. It is being implemented from 1am on Monday until the end of Tuesday as the forecaster warned that developing warm weather was expected to cause widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.
Meteorologist Max Deakin said the mercury could potentially reach the mid-thirties next week after a very hot weekend for many.
“We see temperatures returning to the lows, potentially even into the mid-thirties, in the south on Monday,” one forecast said. “So it’s quite an unusual situation even for the middle of June.
“So as we move into early next week, we’re going to see increased temperatures in some places.”
The risk of water safety incidents will increase as more people visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers, the Met Office has warned.
The forecaster warned that vulnerable people could experience “adverse health effects”, while the wider population could experience sunburn or heat exhaustion.
Those facing delays due to possible delays in road, rail and air travel may experience well-being issues. The forecaster added that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment are more likely to fail, which could lead to power outages and loss of other services in some homes and businesses.
In some places, especially in urban areas, temperatures can be seen staying above 20C overnight.
The UK Health Safety Agency has issued yellow and amber heat health alerts in many parts of England, warning of “significant impacts” on health and social care services due to high temperatures. Warnings started at 12:00 on Thursday and will end next Thursday.
Amber heat health warnings are in place for the east of England and London, as well as the south west and south east. There are yellow alerts in the eastern and western inner parts.
