The Met Office said two areas in the UK were likely to see snow following a period of mild weather that also saw temperatures soar above 20 degrees, as the country prepares for a “temporary return to more variable conditions”.

The UK is experiencing its warmest period of the year so far, and in some areas this meant the first 20°C of 2026, with areas warmer than Spain or Greece; but temperatures could drop and snow could fall in the north-west of England and Scotland over the next few weeks.

The Met Office forecast “indicates a temporary return to more volatile conditions early next week,” it said. “The cold front moving southeast provides a polar maritime airflow that allows cooler air from the north-northwest to move in. This brings a classic March pattern: sunny spells interspersed with showers.

“These showers could fall as rain, sleet or hail; snow is also possible in the higher elevations of Scotland and northern England. Some snow may even reach lower levels in the far north and the Northern Isles. While this may sound dramatic, it remains within the bounds of typical March weather conditions and is expected to be short-lived.”

However, the forecaster added that the cold interlude will not last long. “Current guidance indicates that another Atlantic system will approach mid-week, bringing gusty winds and rain. However, this system appears relatively weak and is likely to quickly build back to high pressure behind it,” the forecast said. The statement was included.

“Looking ahead, aggregate forecasts point to high pressure becoming increasingly favored towards late March and early April. While uncertainty increases beyond the ten-day window, the general direction of travel points to a return to more stable conditions after a brief period of instability. Several possible scenarios remain on the table.

The forecast also states: “The most likely outcome is that high pressure continuing towards the south-west of the UK will keep northern areas more variable, while southern areas will remain drier. Less likely, but still possible, is that more developed low pressure systems will bring windier conditions, particularly to the northern and eastern parts of the country.”

Large-scale atmospheric factors support the idea that higher pressures played an increasing role towards the end of March, the Met Office said.

Continued warmth across parts of North America could help strengthen downstream progress across the Atlantic, influencing the position of the jet stream and favoring more settled conditions near the UK.

The forecaster added that although these long-range signals are never guaranteed, they reinforce the idea that the quieter, brighter weather of spring will continue to pop up regularly in the coming weeks.
