Nevada man dies on General Sherman Tree Trail in Sequoia National Park

An elderly man reportedly died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency on a popular hiking trail in California’s Sequoia National Park.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was identified as John Francis Oliver, 79, of Henderson, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas: by Central Valley.
Oliver was found along the General Sherman Tree Trail, a mile-long path that leads to the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest living tree, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
First responders gave Oliver emergency medical attention at the scene, but the man was eventually pronounced dead at the park. According to SFGATE.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office declined to release additional details about what led to the medical emergency or the circumstances surrounding Oliver’s death “out of respect for the family,” SFGATE reported.
The man’s cause of death has not yet been determined.

The incident occurred as temperatures in the area rose into the upper 90s, according to the National Weather Service.
An extreme heat warning was also in effect Thursday for parts of the nearby Mojave Desert and Indian Wells Valley.
Thursday’s death was the latest in a series of deadly incidents in Sequoia National Park and nearby areas in recent months.
