Michael O’Neill: Northern Ireland manager not taking Blackburn job on permanent basis

Michael O’Neill will not take up the role at Blackburn Rovers on a permanent basis and will remain as Northern Ireland manager.

O’Neill was appointed as Rovers’ interim boss from February until the end of the 2025–26 season, combining the role with that of NI manager.

The 56-year-old won five, drew five and lost five of his 15 matches in temporary charge as Blackburn finished second in 20th place and avoided relegation.

O’Neill has repeatedly said during job sharing that he cannot take on both roles on a permanent basis and will have to choose one or the other.

“Following discussions with the club, Michael has decided to continue his long-term commitment to the role of Northern Ireland head coach, focusing on guiding the national team to qualification for the UEFA European Championship in 2028,” Blackburn said in a statement. he said.

O’Neill had 38 wins, 23 draws and 43 defeats in his two terms in office.

He is aiming to take Northern Ireland to the Euros for the first time since leading his country to the finals in 2016.

“Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate fans. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the players, staff and everyone at the club,” O’Neill said.

“After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain on Northern Ireland and the lead-up to the upcoming European Championship. I would like to thank the owner, board, staff, players and fans for the welcome and support shown to me throughout my time at the club.”
